SAN RAFAEL, CA - Over 12,000 spectators and 700 cyclists gathered upon the streets of Downtown San Rafael for the 15th annual San Rafael Twilight Criterium. Chris Esparza of the San Francisco squad took the win in the Elite 4 category.

The field started off with a manageable pace, but it wasn't long until the solo and team attacks started. The game of cat and mouse continued until one rider put in a serious effort and was 500+ meters off the front. This rider was determined to and wasn't coming back without a fight.

With 8 laps to go and 65 anxious cyclists, Team Audi's Jack Schluckbier pulled forward to stretch the field and close the 500-meter gap on the breakaway. Schluckbier's lead allowed teammate Chris Esparza to move forward and position himself in anticipation of the final sprint. The intensity of the crowd amplified as the last two laps approached and the speed around the 90-degree turns was reaching 40+ mph.

Entering the second to last turn the breakaway was within reach. With 200 meters from the finish, the sprint ignited and Esparza pulled to the front for the win. This is Esparza's second win in two weeks. The San Rafael Twilight Criterium is one of the Bay Areas most popular races and it was exciting to see Team Audi on top of the podium.
